# Calif. Gov't Stalls on When Winery Can Resume, So After 40 Years It's Closing

The tasting room for **Rosenthal – The Malibu Estate** was destroyed in the 2025 Palisades wildfire. It was the winery's primary way of distributing its wines. Now its closing.

The site was leased from California State Government and is being used as a staging and storage area for clean-up operations after the inferno, which destroyed more than 6,800 structures. The government hasn't indicated when – or even if – it may allow commercial tenants to return. 

The winery was founded in 1985 by George Rosenthal. Rosenthal, now 95, had interests in every from real estate and file storage to private aviation to the winery. Also in the Rosenthal enterprises was Raleigh Studios, a large soundstage operator and West Holywood's Sunset Marquis hotel, which was the subject of a 2025 documentary, "If These Walls Could Talk.

Thge winery itself is in Malibu's Newton Canyon and spans 240 acres. It has produced Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and other varietals.
