Small California wineries will get broader access to certified farmers markets under a new California that permits farm wineries that purchase winegrapes from other growers to sell at farmers markets. Under current law, only wine produced from estate-grown fruit could be sold at farmers markets.

The new law also permits three winegrowers to conduct instructional tastings during a market's operating hours. They must be conducted in a separate area of the market, and customers cannot leave that area with an open container of wine.

Winegrowers may pour no more than 3 ounces per person per day and may sell no more than 5,000 gallons annually through all certified farmers market permits they hold. Instructional tastings also will be subject to California’s Responsible Beverage Service training requirements.
