Here's the wildfire situation as we went to press late last night:

Thankfully, there were still no reports of vineyards or wineries in Bordeaux being destroyed by the massive wildfires there. The [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/world/europe/bordeaux-wine-france-wildfires-smoke.html?ref=bevnews.net) ran a piece painting the despair of some winegrape growers in the Bordeaux region, one of whom produces 25,000 bottles a year. He said he was on the verge of giving up. He has been beaten down by a combination of drought, heat waves, weak sales because of changing drinking habits and President Trump's tariffs on French wine.

The smoke reached his vineyard. Burdened by debt and climate-related challenges, the vintner said this year would be his last. “This year, it feels like we’re on another planet,” he told The Times.

For an on-the-scene report, there/s no better source this evening that Jane Anson's [Inside Bordeaux](https://janeanson.com/behind-the-headlines-the-bordeaux-fires?%5Fbhlid=b08d152b627aec759a87e8528774a12721592c90&ref=bevnews.net). The picture is both frightening and other-worldly.
