Democrats in Alaska spent months secretly working to stack the state’s ballot in favor of Mary Peltola, the party’s nominee for Senate. Operatives aligned with Peltola’s campaign traversed the state in an effort to recruit candidates who could siphon votes from the Republican incumbent, Dan Sullivan. They were looking, in particular, for other Dan Sullivans.

The plan worked. Next week, Peltola will be the only Democrat on the ballot, facing two Dan Sullivans and a fourth, long-shot candidate who was also recruited into the race, a crucial one that could determine control of the Senate.

Peltola’s campaign and the lesser-known Sullivan have insisted that they have nothing to do with each other. But our politics reporter Kellen Browning found that Peltola’s team had indeed worked to recruit him into the race. Ballot-stacking tactics are common and generally considered legal. But President Trump repeatedly cried foul after our story was published, calling for Peltola to be removed from the ballot.
