# Services Sector Continues to Expand: ISM

Economic activity in the services sector continued to expand in September, the nation’s purchasing and supply executives in the latest ISM Services PMI Report. The Services PMI registered 54.9%, the 27th consecutive month in expansion territory.

The business activity index for September was 58.6%, clearly in expansion territory, but a decrease of 0.5 percentage point compared to August’s figure of 55.4%.

Supplier Deliveries Index registered 53.2%, 1.9 percentage points higher than the 51.3% recorded in August. This is the 22nd consecutive month that the index has been in expansion territory, indicating slower supplier delivery performance. (Supplier Deliveries is the only ISM PMI   
Reports index that is inversed; a reading above 50% indicates slower deliveries, which is typical as the economy improves and customer demand increases.)

Employment in the services sector returned to expansion in September, as the index registered 50.1%. The reading is up 2.3 percentage points from the August figure of 47.8% and is 1.1 percentage points above the index’s 12-month average of 49%. Comments from respondents  
include: “Filling positions that have been vacated due to promotions or retirements” and “Restructuring due to efficiencies gained using AI tools.”
