Grwoth in U.S. Gross Domestic Product – the sum of the nation's output of goods and services – fell to 1.5% pace in the second quarter from 2.1%, the Commerce Department said.

Consumer spending, which is about 70% of U.S. economic activity, rose at a 3.4% annual rate, up from 0.5% in the first quarter.

The headline numbers don't tell the full story. The U.S. economy has proven to be stronger that expected. Many economists had expected lower growth given the spike in oil prices attributed to the Iran war. Business investment advanced at an8.5%in the second quarter. Investment in housing inched upward despite higher mortgage rates.
