Frey Ranch Distillery, one of the only true farm-to-glass American Whiskey brands, announces its highly-anticipated Frey Ranch Harvester Series: Second Harvest, a one-of-a-kind wheat whiskey that perfectly highlights the sustainable and slow grown grains cultivated and harvested exclusively on the Frey Ranch farm in Northern Nevada.
The release of "Second Harvest" coincides with the distillery's annual Whiskey Harvest – a period between August and October when Co-Founder and Whiskey Farmer Colby Frey harvests the corn, wheat, barley, rye, and oats that are used to make all Frey Ranch whiskeys. For this limited-edition release, Colby and his wife Ashley again tapped the extraordinary talents of Master Blender Nancy Fraley, who cherry picked her favorite single barrels alongside the Freys and Frey Ranch Master Distiller Russell Wedlake to create a unique whiskey blend.
How It's Made: The brand's inaugural Harvester Series ("First Harvest") release leaned heavily into a rye-dominant blend, "Second Harvest" is a blend of predominantly 100% wheat whiskey. Compared to "First Harvest" with its peppery spice, "Second Harvest" has a softer, rounder and sweeter taste profile with a smoother, creamier mouthfeel that is ideal for sipping neat. "Second Harvest" showcases the soft, white winter wheat that Colby's family has been growing for generations.
With barrels ranging in age from eight years and seven months to four years and six months, the blend of this exquisite sipping spirit features 52.5% of 100% Wheat Whiskey, followed by 14.25% of Four Grain Bourbon, 9.5% of 100% Unmalted Barley Whiskey, 9.5% of 100% Malted Barley Whiskey, 9.5% of 100% Barley Whiskey (half malted & half unmalted), which is rounded off with a whisper of Quad Malt Whiskey at 4.25%.
Tasting Notes: At 122.44 proof, the resulting Second Harvest blend delivers an aroma of hot chocolate spiked with crème de menthe, a hint of muddled mint, whipped cream, and banana pudding topped with lemon meringue, biscotti dipped in caramel macchiato, almond butter, and nougat. The palate presents waves of Sierra Nevada alfalfa blossom honey, shortbread, crème brulee, toasted marshmallow, Greek baklava with walnuts, orange marmalade over a hot buttered croissant, and freshly cut tangerine peels. The finish is soft and creamy from the wheat, yet it lingers on the tongue with custard notes and light orange citrus.
Packaging: While the liquid inside the bottle is a testament to the high-quality, slow grown grains harvested by Colby, the bottle itself is an homage to the Frey family's legacy of farming in Nevada. The traditional Frey Ranch stopper is replaced with a vintage tractor topper made from 100% recycled metal. The bottle is nestled in exterior packaging reminiscent of a grain silo – a cheeky nod to the grains silos that pepper the picturesque landscape at the Frey Ranch farm in Fallon. The Frey family motto "Be good to the land and the land will be good to you" is prominently featured on the packaging as a reminder of Frey Ranch Distillery's commonsense approach to sustainability.
