Schiff: Canada's Wine Boycott May Leave Lasting Damage
After meeting with Sonoma and Napa County winegrowers, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Canada's boycott of American wine has been devastating.
Schiff had traveled to Alberta, the only Canadian province that still permits California wine sales. Retailers om that province saidthey are noticing waning demand for U.S. wines, and in Britosh Columia, sales of local wines were up 157% from last year.
“Sadly, all too many Canadians feel betrayed by the President’s attacks on Canada, his demeaning comments about the country, and the 51st state nonsense,” Schiff wrote Oct. 14 on X.
Workdwide, U.S. wine exports have been declining even before Trump's comments. Export volume fell to 202 million liters valued at $830 million. last year from 409 million liters, valued at $1.6 billion in 2025.
Exports to Canada plunged last year to 12% of total U.S. export volume from 36% a year earlier, according to the Wine Insitute. The decline represented 81% of the worldwide drop.
