Spirits Industry Donated $2.1 Million to Build George Washington's Distillery
The distilled spirits industry, led by the Distilled Spirits Council, played a major role in the reconstruction of George Washington's Distillery and Gristmill at Mount Vernon. donating $2.1 million for the special project.
In December 2001, the Distilled Spirits Council announced its partnership with Mount Vernon to provide financial support for the excavation and restoration of George Washington’s Distillery on its original foundation. The site of the distillery was excavated by Mount Vernon’s archaeologists between 1999 and 2006. The reconstruction began in 2005 and it was officially opened to the public in spring 2007.
