Tenuta di Biserno Debuts New Super Tuscan Blend to U.S.
Tenuta di Biserno, A Tuscan winery founded in 2001 by the Antinori family, introduces a new wine to their portfolio, ColleMezzano di Biserno 2023 (SRP $318). It joins the ranks of Super Tuscan blends in Biserno’s portfolio as an additional flagship wine.
ColleMezzano will only be produced in years with peak growing conditions. Only 5,000 bottles were produced of the ColleMezzano 2023, just 300 of which have been imported to the United States. Through the meticulous selection process of grapes, Biserno aims to highlight the potential of the Upper Maremma terroir and their commitment to their core principles.
“ColleMezzano is a wine with great personality and expression due to the combination of growing conditions and terroir. We made the decision to purchase the Collemezzano vineyard in 2019 because we thought this location would yield a wine both indicative of our house style and reflective of the terroir of this region,” explained CEO Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi, co-owner of Tenuta di Biserno. “ColleMezzano is an important addition to our collection. With this wine, we hope to share the philosophies we hold at Biserno – precision, depth, and loyalty to the land.”
Since the mid-1990’s Bordeaux varietals have been grown in the Collemezzano vineyard (5 hectares), located in the Upper Maremma just north of Bibbona. Grapes from this vineyard thrive off the soil rich in clay and minerals as well as the prime position near the sea that allows for optimal air and sun exposure.
The 2023 harvest in Tuscany was marked by a rainy spring and periods of vineyard disease pressure, followed by a warm, dry summer that helped the grapes ripen steadily across the region. Careful vineyard maintenance resulted in fruit with vibrant acidity, concentrated flavors, and balanced structure despite reduced yields. The 2023 vintage from Tuscany produced expressive wines with ripe red fruit, freshness, and refined tannins.
Winemaking Notes: ColleMezzano is a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. After aging in partially new French oak barriques for 12 to 16 months, followed by an additional minimum 12 months in bottle, ColleMezzano emerged with a strong saline finish paired with aromas of graphite, red fruits, sweet spice, and balsamic minerality. These notes, paired with velvety tannins, add up to a wine that is versatile while still making a bold statement. Elegant, lively, and rich while maintaining body and character, this wine is a special addition to the portfolio and a striking representation of the region.
