Subject to Change Wine Co., once one of the biggest natural wine producers in the country, is closing.
The closing comes after the first got evicted because they couldn't pay rent. Plus they owe vendors a lot of money, Alex Pomerantz, owner and winemaker, told the San Francisco Chronicle. Now, he hopes to sell off inventory and pay creditors, including growers.
The business started in 2017 after Pomerantz left a winemaking job at Kivelstadt Cellars. His wines were a hit in San Francisco Bay Area restaurants and wine bars. The business grew to sales in 35 states, 15 countries, 20,000 barrels, which likely made his the largest producer of wines with nothing removed and nothing – not even sulfur dioxide as a preservative – added.
Wine sales began to fall in 2022, and Whole Foods canceled its contract last year. That was about 20% of sales.
