Home Distilling Ban Goes to Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court is being asked to strike down the federal statute prohibiting home distilling, which it defines as a criminal offense, punishable by a $10 fine, five years in prison and forfeiture of the offender's home.
Historic Vineyards in Spain's Sierra de Gredos Region Reported Destroyed
Wildfires have destroyed historic vineyards across some of Spain's most renowned wine regions. Spain is the world's third largest wine producer. Decades-old vineyards have been reported destroyed. Growers in Avila and Madrid are reporting severe losses. Hannah Mallory of Gregory+Wine tells us that San Martin de Valdeiglesias, a subzone of DO Madrid, was where one of the fires started. Gironde Wildfire 'Has Not Progressed'
The wildfire that ravaged 42,000 acres in France's Gironde region "has not progressed," officials said late Wednesday. "Seven fairly significant flare-ups" were recorded during the day. "Three are still active, but they remain within the areas already affected by the fire," Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas said. Bordeaux is a city in Gironde. As of late last night, flames have remained miles away from the main wine-producing estates, and the fires have not directly destroyed the famous vineyards.

Calif. Said to Favor Calif. Wineries Over Out-of-State Wineries in Sales to Retailers
The lawsuit alleges California laws favor California wineries over out-of-state competitors selling to California retailers. This, the complaint says, violates the dormant Commerce Clause and the Privileges Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The plaintiff winery wants to be a "licensed winegrower" and get the benefits that come with that license. A California retailer plaintiff wants to get wines from all 50 states for resale.
