Late last week, U.S. Customs & Immigration Service officials privately reassured business leaders the most work visas won't be affected and clarified to reporters that most immigrants seeking peremanent residency won't have to leave the country. But it has not issued any formal guidance saying so. The change in stance follows intensive lobbying by big business and allies.
